Well, my mom is turning 60 this week. It's super hard to believe for me but it is true... So, Kiersten, my brother Bean and I wanted to do something special. (Normally, when my parents have a birthday we all go out to dinner and THEY pay for US... Not very special for them, but since it was the big 6-0 we had to do something more memorable.) I would've invited my aunt's and uncles and had a big party if given the chance, but they are all in Florida for a few months being spoiled retired people :)
So all we could really do at this point was cook a dinner and surprise my mom at my house... somehow, we got my dad to casually have her come over to visit Cailen. She actually suspected nothing. So we decorated with balloons, streamers, flowers, etc and we even made my parents play games with all of us. "Catch Phrase" and "Apples to Apples" and it was actually a lot of fun. The games were used to stall for the bigger surprise--at the last minute my brother figured out he could come out from Vermont with his kids and wife... my parents have been desperately trying to visit them but every chance they have has bad weather, someone is sick or something getting in the way... My parents are usually people that need to get to bed early; I didn't want them to think they could leave at 7pm so I had to stall dinner with the games, etc...
Randy showed up at 6pm... my mom
thought I was answering the door to give Jeremy a menu file for the coffee shop and that for whatever reason HIS kids were walking into my kitchen talking... she was paying no attention and then my bro's family all piled in the dining room and the party was complete! :) Dinner was great, I made and decorated a cake from scratch and we got to take some family pics... this is the first time the grandkids have all been together, and my brother finally got to meet my daughter! It was a very successful and great day and we were all super happy. Just thought I would share. :)
Oh, and Kiersten and I have noticed that we own similar items of clothes... so as much as I hate the "TWIN" dressing of friends, we dressed alike for the party... She wants to be me... but really... who doesn't?
